President – Thomas G. Cotter, MD MS

Dr. Thomas G. Cotter is the President of Texas Liver Care, leading integrated initiatives in liver and metabolic health across clinical care, research, and education. Trained as both a pharmacist and physician, he earned his medical degree with First Class Honors in Ireland and completed Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, followed by Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology fellowships at the University of Chicago Medicine.

 

He is triple board-certified (Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Transplant Hepatology), board-eligible for Obesity Medicine, and holds a Master of Science in Public Health Sciences from the University of Chicago. Dr. Cotter’s research has been supported by the NIH (K award >$1 million) and AASLD ($200 k), with additional roles in multi-center consortium grants totaling >$20 million.

 

Previously on faculty at UT Southwestern Medical Center, he is now helping to lead Texas Liver Care, advancing expert care, research translation, and community education throughout Texas and beyond.

Research & Trial Leadership

  • Prior Principal Investigator for the Intercept FRESH Phase 2 clinical trial (alcohol-associated hepatitis) and the NIH-funded Dallas Dionysus Study.
  • Co-Investigator on DURECT AHFIRM, GSK Starlight, and Altimmune ALD clinical trials.
  • Steering committee member for NIH-funded consortia including AlcHepNet, ITAALD, and the INTEGRATE Collaborative, contributing to projects collectively exceeding $20 million in funding.
  • Recipient of an NIH K award totaling >$1 million and an AASLD research grant of $200k.
  • Published extensively and presents his work worldwide. His research has received over 4,000 citations and an H-index exceeding 30, demonstrating his productivity and influence, and placing him among the most impactful investigators in hepatology.

Academic Leadership & Service

  • Assistant Professor (2021-2026) – UT Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Health.
  • Led the Fort Worth Liver Transplant Clinic at UTSW’s Monty & Tex Moncrief Medical Center (2022-2026).
  • Chief Fellow in Gastroenterology (2018) – University of Chicago Medicine.
  • Mentor to trainees and organizer of educational programs; contributor to clinical guidelines and professional society committees at the national and international level.
  • Editorial reviewer and board member for leading hepatology journals.
  • Advisor and consultant to multiple pharmaceutical companies developing therapies in liver and metabolic disease.

Service & Global Health

  • Contributed to global health initiatives in Bolivia (Centro Médico Humberto Parra) and Nepal (Draíocht Charity), leveraging medical expertise to improve access to care in underserved settings, efforts that reflect the Foundation’s mission of equitable liver and metabolic health worldwide.
